The Game of Love and Chance, the final show directed by Ted Swetz at UMKC, opened in April 2019 in the Black Box theater on the UMKC campus. Having previously worked with Ted on Stupid F***ing Bird, I was excited to see what he had in mind for a flavor with this show. It is a production that is very aware of its heritage and also the current era we live in now. The sound addresses this by staying with an old fashioned love soundtrack with themes that repeat throughout. At times, we chose to bring in some more contemporary music to accompany the light-hearted tone of certain scenes. Much of this came across through dialogue, but one key moment of confrontation was accompanied by Ennio Morricone's theme to "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly," an idea championed by Ted. For me, this production was a chance to play with the space and help transport the audience to another place.
Three of the musical examples were original pieces that I created to help us nail down the flavor of the music we needed before we put the show together.
